Every single piece on this album, from the haunting “Maiden Voyage” to the gently swinging “Dolphin Dance”, has found its way into the standard jazz repertoire. Herbie Hancock has created a milestone in modern jazz with his extraordinary compositions, his playing and his solos.
Even compared to Herbie Hancock’s great Blue Note album from the 1960s, Maiden Voyage from 1965 remains one of the artistic highlights of the great pianist’s career. Hancock is accompanied here by his bandmates from the Miles Davis Quintet, Ron Carter on bass and Tony Williams on drums, as well as Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and George Coleman on tenor saxophone.
The quintet embarks on an oceanic exploration of five original Hancock compositions, some of which have become enduring standards in the jazz lexicon, including the title track, “Eye of the Hurricane” and “Dolphin Dance”.
This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition was mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes and pressed on 180g vinyl by Optimal.
